Vehicles are being ordered, charging infrastructure is being planned, and funding is being secured. Zero-emission buses reached 60 per cent of the EU city bus market in 2025, with battery-electric registrations up 48 per cent year on year (Sustainable Bus, 2026). Globally, around 780,000 electric buses now operate worldwide (Precedence Research, 2025). UITP, the international authority on public transport, has itself confirmed that with the introduction of electric vehicles, existing IT systems need to be adapted to changing requirements \u2014 a direct acknowledgement that the sector recognises this gap. And the operational variability that makes ITS capability so critical is significant: energy consumption for electric buses varies between 0.8 and 3.8 kWh per km (UITP, 2022) \u2014 nearly a fivefold range driven by route topography, passenger load, speed, and weather. In cold climates, heating systems alone can reduce range by up to 50 per cent at 0\u00b0C (MDPI, 2021). Critically, this challenge is not confined to cold climates. After all, it handles scheduling,\u00a0dispatch, and real-time tracking for the diesel fleet. Why would\u00a0electric\u00a0be different?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:160}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Because electric buses\u00a0don&#8217;t\u00a0behave like diesel buses. They have different performance profiles, different failure modes, and a fundamentally different relationship with their energy source. A diesel bus running low on fuel is a controllable inconvenience \u2014 the warning light typically signals tens of\u00a0kilometres\u00a0of remaining range, and a diversion to refuel is straightforward. An electric bus approaching a critical state of charge is a different proposition entirely. The remaining range is smaller to begin with, and it is variable \u2014 affected by route topography, passenger load, and the demands of heating or cooling systems. Battery state of health adds another layer of uncertainty: a degraded battery reporting a low charge may have significantly less real-world range than the figure suggests. Without visibility of all of this in the control\u00a0centre, in real time, service controllers are making decisions in the\u00a0dark. Managing\u00a0both simultaneously, with different monitoring requirements, different data streams, and different intervention needs, places real pressure on your operational infrastructure.\u00a0Not every ITS handles this consistently or completely. The result can be that service controllers are making decisions about electric vehicles without the full picture, not because the data\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0exist, but because their system\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0surfacing it as well as it could.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:160}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">That gap is where reliability is lost. Whether the range figure they\u2019re looking at is one they can rely on. Well-documented incidents across multiple continents have shown that high-voltage battery failures in electric buses rarely arrive without warning. In several verified cases, vehicles had exhibited prior charging system faults or abnormal battery behaviour before a failure progressed to fire, with serious consequences for the depot, adjacent vehicles, and in some cases personnel. Specialist researchers have logged at least 27 verifiable high-voltage battery fires in electric buses worldwide since 2010, across a global fleet of over 250,000 vehicles (EV FireSafe, January 2024). When a vehicle\u2019s charge is predicted to approach a critical threshold mid-service, the controller needs to act, not navigate to a different system, cross-reference a schedule, and hope a charging bay is free. The information needs to be present, in context, at the moment it matters.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:160}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">It means the data flowing from the vehicle, from the Controller Area Network (CANBus) that monitors battery health, motor performance, temperature, and fault conditions in real time, is being processed and surfaced as something actionable, not archived for someone to review later.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559739&quot;:160}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">And it means predictive capability is built in. Monitoring and tracking battery degradation to identify the issue before it causes service failure. Recognising energy consumption patterns that point to maintenance needs. Understanding which routes place the most demand on which vehicles. Your ITS should provide unified visibility across your entire fleet, electric and diesel, in a single operational view. Alerts that reach controllers in time to act, not in time to report. Charge planning that is integrated with service scheduling, not bolted on alongside it.
